Comics + Little Kids = Awesome Fun March 26, 2007
Dinosaur Comics through the eyes of a little kid, from the Create a Comic Project.
For all those of you the appreciated the little projects where people let little kids practice their English using Dinosaur Comics and Penny Arcade, this is the webcomic for you. Create a Comic Project is basically an ongoing version of these projects with a wide variety of different comics used for templates.
John Baird has an ongoing afterschool program at the local library in which he brings in blank comic templates and actual comics with blanked out dialogue for kids to work on their creative writing skills. It’s an awesome way to help kids in a district with very few extracirricular activities going on and very little money to help start new ones. There’s a nice gallery showing some of the kids having fun and learning over here (which also shows the ‘oh so cool’ Can of Inspiration, something I wish I had on many occasions).
And Mr. Baird is kind enough to share the results with the webcomics community by posting them over at Comic Genesis. And it is awesome.
Now, these comics are all made by kids who actually know English as their primary language, so there’s a bit of a different flavor to it than the previous projects, but they’re still, you know, kids, so it’s still awesomely innocent and cute. And since Mr. Baird uses several different comics as templates, we get to see several different kinds of wackiness. So whether it be the characters from Strange Candy who are oddly obsessed with high heels, Penelope from Questionable Content going crazy in various different ways, or even the Chugworth Academy girls talking about a movie, it’s all good.
But what’s really eerie are the Dinosaur Comics ones (such as the one thumbnailed above), in that they are EXTREMELY SIMILAR to Dinosaur Comics itself. They start around here (prepare to be stunned). Have we somehow stumbled upon the secret of Dinosaur Comics? Does Ryan North simply go from town to town, library to library, giving his blank templates to small children and then reaping the profits of their efforts? I cry foul, sir! A Wonderful Project indeed!
So check out the Create a Comic Project, and expose Ryan North for the fraud that he is.

I thought this was awesome the very first time I saw it, and every time I’ve seen it since he’s taken it to a completely new level of awesomeness.
